All they need to do is get a few more states to ratify the popular vote deal they've got. Once enough states to get 270 sign on and it goes into effect those states will give their EC votes to the popular vote winner. They don't even have to get rid of the EC they just sidestep it all together.
That is one way they do it and something I'm more concerned about, but they've been pushing for that for ages and most states refuse to go along with it as it's just bad for the state.
