I know Louie. He carries in CHURCH, and I assure you that he doesn't extend his sense of the sacred to the room he just entered, though he does revere the Constitution.

lol nice. tell him hi from the bad hombres over at the donald for the win dot net

Carrying in church is quite common, it's well know that Mass is a primary target of crazies.

I heard that Boebart did something similar.

At least for congressmen. How many of them would support our right to walk around DC with a concealed weapon, I wonder?

Article 3, Section 6, Paragraph 1

Rights and Disabilities of Members

The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States. They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.

Our founding fathers were the shit.

Must've been taking the Colonial Era version of Super Male Vitality!.

40
pingpongdingdong 40 points ago +40 / -0

Too easy for one party to “detain” reps on trumped up charges to prevent them from voting. Old tactic that the founding fathers knew was bullshit and prevented.

I'm descended from an original member of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, he was a truly amazing young man who personally knew Thomas Jefferson, while Jefferson felt that his future was extremely bright. Unfortunately, war and other factors took place which prevented that, but it still prides me that his name exists within the Capitol. 🇺🇲

1

44
BritGroyper 44 points ago +45 / -1

He "passed" the cops? So they're just immune to the police I guess?

26
conservativefrank 26 points ago +29 / -3

Exactly. They want rights we don't have, and some of the "we" who don't have those rights are cheering.

19
VoidWanderer 19 points ago +23 / -4

It's not that they want those privileges (because it's priviledges they're flaunting not rights), it just blatantly proves that they have privileges that we don't have. If you or I had walked around a metal detector in a federal building like that we'd have been tackled and cuffed no matter what reason we had. If you or I tried to enter a federal building with a handgun like Boebert does we would be arrested for "breaking the law" regardless of what the constitution says.

Politicians are above the law and they know it. All they're doing is rubbing our noses in it.

11
uiopy1 11 points ago +12 / -1

I completely and totally agree, because they truly live by a different set of rules than we do, but another comment noted that this is a privilege afforded to Congress by the Constitution: Article 3, Section 6, Paragraph 1. I'm fine with this specific provision, as it only applies to their security while they do their jobs or are in transit to go do their jobs, and they would still be subject to metal detection and stop and frisk at other buildings just like the rest of us.

4
LessAndLessIronic 4 points ago +4 / -0

The second and forth amendments are also rights afforded by the constitution.

We are literally picking and choosing what parts of the constitution matter here. If "shall not be infringed" isn't worth the paper it's printed on then this shouldn't be either.

Making their rights special just reduces incentive for them to honor ours -- which means they fail at the single most important part of their job.

10
Jabron661 10 points ago +12 / -2

You are not the sharpest knife in the drawer here, and you need to have some perspective.

This privilege (not being allowed to be stopped by police as they do their congressional duties) is there for a REALLY good reason. This prevents some wanna be local tyrant, say for example, the mayor of DC, from using her goon squad of cops to harass or otherwise intimidate or even arrest a congressman to get them to vote a certain way or otherwise sway the congress.

Do you really want local police to be able to do that? That is 1939 Germany level of fascism, and they certainly need that privilege in this country.

We all know that they do get away with tons of other bullshit, but in this case, this privilege is absolutely necessary.

The fact you got 7 up votes for a comment as dumb as this is making me think this site is going down hill fast.

-2
VoidWanderer -2 points ago +2 / -4

I understand the point of why it's in the constitution, that was not my point and the fact that you can't see that says a lot.

Members of congress are immune from being prosecuted for many crimes, like insider trading. They can commit felonies, like helping illegals across the border, and have nothing happen to them. Boebert could walk into any other federal building while being armed and no one would arrest her, even though at any other time it would be legal to.

They didn't make sure that there were witnesses there to spread the word that they were using their immunity powers to vote just to exercise them, it was to show us that no matter what we want to do they will always be above the law. The site isn't "going down hill fast", some people just understand the point others make and why they are making them.

1
Jabron661 1 point ago +3 / -2

Hmm, this was the main point of your post as far as I could tell...

"If you or I had walked around a metal detector in a federal building like that we'd have been tackled and cuffed no matter what reason we had. If you or I tried to enter a federal building with a handgun like Boebert does we would be arrested for "breaking the law"

So, you might have meant other things along with that, but that is what I picked up on. If your point was the other things they do that are above the law, you should have mentioned those privileges instead of this one.

2
Farmerbob1 2 points ago +2 / -0

In this case, it is a good thing. Capital police cannot detain congress members. If they could, then Democrats would simply detain Republicans before any important vote.

13
ViduusMAGA 13 points ago +13 / -0

It’s in the constitution. It prevents cops from playing games and preventing congressmen from getting there to vote.

2
LessAndLessIronic 2 points ago +2 / -0

What makes this particular part of the constitution special? Why do we honor it when they use the rest of the document as toilet paper?

1
iSignedUpForThis 1 point ago +1 / -0

Looks more like a few of them are exerting a right they allowed to be taken from them. This sounds like a good thing to me.

1
LessAndLessIronic 1 point ago +1 / -0

That, in and of itself is a good thing, I agree.

Though they could exert the same right as a 2nd and 4th amendment issue and thus stand for all of us, safely shielded from prison by Article 3.

I guess that would require DC to do something for America though, and that would be backwards, wouldn't it?

1
ViduusMAGA 1 point ago +1 / -0

It’s all special

1
ViduusMAGA 1 point ago +1 / -0

Um, pretty sure we should continue to honor the whole thing... you switching sides?

2
LessAndLessIronic 2 points ago +2 / -0

No, just a little bit pissed that we're falling all over ourselves to defend Congress' rights when they have never done the same for us.

11
Golvic 11 points ago +11 / -0

When they are going to vote, unless they committed treason or murdered someone, it is against the law to stop them. Basically going to vote gives them Mario like star powers.

1
6ft7WeighsAnFingTon 1 point ago +2 / -1

Back when duels were legal and accepted, they provided a natural and effective check on slander, insults, etc. It kept things relatively polite. People knew that if they stepped out of line, they could be put on the spot in a very real way.

Nowadays pretty much anybody can say pretty much anything about pretty much anybody. It’s a terrible state of affairs. Public discourse has gone completely down the toilet

I don’t condone violence as a solution to political disagreements, etc. But it would be kind of funny to see some sort of modern “dual system“ enacted, may be a non-lethal form involving some sort of MMA style contest?

Or maybe those giant foam clubs that they use in basic?

2

As much as I love the defiance of this idiotic rule, just what in the hell makes a Representative so damn special that they get to carry and we don't?

3
Tendies_or_GTFO 3 points ago +3 / -0

The Constitution.

1
Directional 1 point ago +1 / -0

Haha you missed the "and we don't" part of my comment. The Constitution says I get to carry, too. Being a member of Congress gives you no special constitutional privilege.

1
Tendies_or_GTFO 1 point ago +1 / -0

But the Constitution does not give you special privileges when entering the Capitol to go vote, which is what the metal detector rule runs afoul of when those manning the detectors try and detain a member of Congress. Your post raises two separate issues, I only responded to one of them and failed to clarify.

2

2
Sweden_wuz_Rite 2 points ago +2 / -0

Oh okay, THEY can break the rules in the Capitol...

3
Tendies_or_GTFO 3 points ago +3 / -0

Nope, not breaking the rules. Members of Congress cannot be detained en route to vote outside of some very specific circumstances (under arrest for murder or treason among the primary reasons). They can also be armed inside the Capitol complex.

2

And he would be correct. Law Enforcement can't stop a sitting member of congress when they are in route to vote.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_One_of_the_United_States_Constitution#Clause_1:_Compensation_and_legal_protection

"They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place."

Pelosi better watch herself. She's on shaky ground with this BS. She can make staffers and regular people do all sorts of stuff but actual members are there because the people want them there. They were voted into office. The people are their boss not Pelosi.

These are not at the front main gate where the plebs enter for a tour. These are newly installed at the back door where all the members enter. Its not even a the "staff" entrance. This is the entrance for the actual elected officials.

No one has any problem with civilians and staff following rules etc etc... but the members are sent there by the people. The whole fucking point is they represent US, but suddenly Pelosi thinks she's in charge. Like she's been made queen.

Forcibly disarming the members is the equivalence of saying she has the right and the power to disarm the people. Its like saying 2A has been repealed.
