The military didn't back anyone. Joint chiefs of staff are civilians, granted most are former military officers. They are a civilian advisory committee for the president, that's it.
Regardless, they made an apolitical statement saying Trump is currently the Commander in Chief, that outside influences will not waiver the resolve of the military to obey lawful orders, which is directly in their oath, and that if Biden is inaugurated on Jan 20 he will then be the CiC, per the constitution.

The military will absolutely not take a side in this or ANY political fight, if Trump orders them to take a lawful action they will follow the order.

Roman army's were under the command of their generals, not the Senate, as a result the military power of the republic and this the real power of the empire. The whole reason Cesar was put in a position to have to cross the Rubicon was because for the previous decade the actual political struggle was between him and Pompey.
When a resolution to resolve the political struggle between the 2 generals failed and thus the loyalty of the Roman citizens, the conflict finally turned violent and the centuries old tradition of legion vs legion wars begun.
This is why our founding fathers created the system they did and in the beginning never even envisioned a standing army at all, instead relying on the common man to be the militia when the time was needed.
If we still had that system BTW we would not even be in this situation, our founders would have marched into the state capitals and did the needful.
The ruling class sits on their throne largely because they have the military and an unconstitutional insurrection act.
Wanting them to step in on their own accord is poison and ridiculously short sighted.
