See, I'm actually old enough to remember the horrors of the Soviet Union, and there is nothing I will not do to make sure my kids don't have to suffer through that evil.
I am not (late 80's vintage), but I read extensively. And while I was aware of the communist horror, I was less aware of how many things lead to it every damn time. Same process, same playbook, not a thing different every time.
You are wrong. Despite all the horrors, the russians chose to go for that option because having tasted communism, they realized that it is more important to have freedom.
