Here it is, "In November 2011, Whisper Systems announced that it had been acquired by Twitter. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by either company.[12] The acquisition was done "primarily so that Mr. Marlinspike could help the then-startup improve its security".[13] Shortly after the acquisition, Whisper Systems' RedPhone service was made unavailable.[14] Some criticized the removal, arguing that the software was "specifically targeted [to help] people under repressive regimes" and that it left people like the Egyptians in "a dangerous position" during the events of the 2011 Egyptian revolution.[15]"

To get the guy who later left and started the company from scratch again. Read the Wikipedia entry closely.

What are the best options for email? Protonmail is expensive if you need space and they submit to every law enforcement request. I thought about tutanota, but is it better to fall under the 9 eyes or 5 eyes... does it even matter? I guess anything is better than gmail/hotmail

Protonmail is free unless you need lots of storage.

If you have the cash, you could also get a shared VPS server at a reputable company, or (if you have more cash) a dedicated server to host your own domains and email accounts.

I've had my own server for years and all my email passes through TLS/SSL encryption.

LAVABIT For those interested, you should read up about (or watch video presentations by) Ladar Levison. He had a company called Lavabit which provided 2048-bit end-to-end encryption for email. Long story short, Levison was trying to make a new universal standard for secure emails so he started a company and coded it all himself. Edward Snowden used his service.

Thanks to the FBI and an asshole judge, Ladar was compelled by the court to turn over the SSL encryption keys to the feds so they code read the emails. Being an amazing troll, and the judge being a tool who didn't define HOW he needed to provide the keys, Ladar printed the keys out in 4pt type across 11 pages. That's some serious Kek.

Cockmail -- https://cock.li/ (you can have an alternative, more neutral, domain name)

Disroot -- https://disroot.org/en

Host your own or find somebody you know to host it for you.

I'm not a fan of the EFF. I vaguely remember in the past they thwarted digital freedom instead of helping it.

Feel free to research them yourself.
