I have to think the vast majority of his supporters know he didn't betray anyone or the cause, he just didn't have the courage to go full Caesar. It's apparently what's needed but it's a lot to ask from an old man. He has done more than enough, it's someone else's turn.
Not to mention the huge risk he'd be putting his family in by doing so.
