Back in the day, it was against the flag code to wear any kind of US-flag-designed apparel, except on a soldier's or astronaut's uniform or the like, because it was seen as disrespectful, and because inevitably you'd get your clothes dirty, sit on them, fade them, etc. Hippies in the Sixties would do stuff like wear flag patches on their butts or blow their noses on flag hankies.
But that ship has sailed, about twenty or thirty years ago, and only old geezerettes like myself still remember. Now it's more like the medieval love of wearing heraldic emblems and designs.
