It's actually even easier to win via primary-ing the incumbent, because there are people who vote in the general election who don't vote in the primary. You don't need 50.1% of all Republican voters, you just need 50.1% of those who choose to vote in the primary. If you run a good campaign, you might motivate your supporters to vote in the primary when they normally wouldn't.
