Well lawyers will say and do what they feel they need to in order to save their client. I don't fault them for doing that, it is literally their job. It sucks but everyone is entitled to a vigorous defense during trial. If you ever have the occasion to need a lawyer, you really, really want them to do whatever it takes to defend you. I know this from personal experience.
