It's Orwellian doublethink made manifest. It's not necessarily 'idiocy', so much as having been indoctrinated to the point that they can simultaneously hold two contradictory opinions - 'ACAB' and 'OMG won't someone please think of the police officers?!?!' - and experience no cognitive dissonance.
