Why should I respect someone for taking a job with the government putting on some clothes that match their coworkers and ruining peoples lives or killing people?

Agents of the state who kill people, and who ruin peoples lives enforcing laws on victimless crimes are not heros. They are villains. At the very best they are neutral but still a fucking mercenary who ruins lives for money.
