Holy cow, that guy was a dead ringer for Barron, at least in build! I think Barron's a tad taller, though.
His story was pretty epic. He kept making enough money in the US to come back to Germany and see his family, and then Germany kept trying to grab his money, military service, etc., so then he'd have to go back to the US. He literally married the girl next door, if I recall correctly, and she was a pretty awesome lady herself.
The boy in the photo's father died when he was age eleven. His mother refused to do the usual thing, which was to sell their business, or marry someone else. She had no confidence an unrelated man would act in her best interests or those of this boy, her only child, Frederick. The president's father.
So she continued to operate the business herself, very unusual for a woman. But she needed someone with her, a family member.
As there was no one else, THIS KID above had to do business like a man at age eleven, and did. He knew what awaited him, if they didn't succeed. That is why he has that over-worked, scared but brave, look. Having this professional portrait taken was part of making a man out of him at age eleven.
He grew up to be wealthy, happily married, with a bunch of kids of his own, and the father of a president. One of his sons, the oldest, died of alcoholism however.
