For newcomers who haven't yet had a chance to consider what's wrong with the view that u/musket_22 is making fun of, this is a major reason that the electoral college exists to begin with.
Say you're forming a new nation out of a loosely organized cluster of states. Some states have more people, some have less. Why would the less populated states even bother joining your wonderful union if they knew they would just be overridden by the "popular vote" of the more crowded states? Why would farmers, ranchers, and miners (all people who produce tangible, valuable resources and tend to inhabit less populated areas) value "union" if it just meant that a few densely-packed cities would tell them how to live and work?
That's also how a vast area of our nation feels about this latest election as well. Washington DC doesn't represent us; why should we listen to them?
