I have to imagine there is a not insignificant number of veterans with certain skill sets in this country. Skills like insurgency, guerrilla tactics, etc. These men don't tend to announce publically their intentions before they act.
I wonder if the intelligence community has picked up some of this hypothetical chatter, and that's the reason for the overreaction in DC.

Not unless the commanders involved are idiots.
Insurgencies and guerrilla forces will specifically avoid hitting a heavily guarded area. The emphasis instead is very much Clausewitzian methods. You seek critical vulnerabilities with inadequate protection and hammer there. Guerrillas aren’t gonna strike a heavily guarded position. Most you would get is harassing fire to wear down the defending groups mental state.
Honestly a few hundred troops on sentry duty and a few mobile QRF elements should be sufficient to stave off that type of thing.
My point is that it wasn't heavily guarded until just recently. Why?
Is the buildup due to the events of last week, or is there intelligence around an unknown (to us) threat?
Yeah but that’s WAY overkill for any sort of guerrilla warfare. For context 2MARDIV is ~20,000 Marines.
You do not need the equivalent of an entire division clustered in one spot to dissuade guerrilla attacks.
I don’t know what the thinking is but that’s some stupid serious numbers. During OIF/OEF there were actual full on operations that relied on fewer troops.
Trump must think some group is going go ballistic, it's not us, so it must be them. So the question becomes What is going to piss the left off? Must be something that hasn't happened yet.
