Whenever people try this IRL, I just laugh in their face about how stupid they sound. I never take them seriously, but they get the impression that I seriously believe they're legitimately dumb.

I would argue that it is important to respond to them, but ONLY doing so extremely politely (despite how they act). You will never convince a troll of anything, but the polite way you interact with facts and logic will likely red pill the people observing the discussion.
My buddy helped me with this by simply saying, "you are arguing with retards". From that day I do not engage cause it rang true from all of my countless useless attempts at rational conversation with them.
