It felt at the time like it was about making fun of ALL politics, that both sides could laugh over the absurdity, not just a targeted one person approach like the current β€œorange man bad” style over and over. But maybe if I went back and rewatched it now, I would see it differently

Exactly, Stewart and Colbert on Comedy Central ripped everyone and everything. It was comedy, now it’s just an attack. Two very different things.
