Companies set up a Twitter online premise to interact with customers. I never used it but for example if someone tweets @CBS you suck, someone at CBS is there to respond, aggregate sentiment and then push BS into the CBS public Twitter site.
It is through advertisement/promotion deals, and through selling user data. However, to quell some concern there, in almost all cases that is aggregate data that cannot be traced back to the original user. Think keyword searches and a breakdown of active users from specific geographic locations at or around certain times of day.
I work for a company that is processing similar data. . .we are forbidden by contract from targeting or identifying specific users from the data we're given, but can use it for market research, for example, to know which products to push. That isn't to say though that people have always abided by these contracts.
I only visit a very select group of people on twitter without having an account myself. Works fine. I have never seen an add on twitter that way and always wondered how they make money.
BTW. The very select group is almost down to zero after the last couple of weeks.
I believe corporate licensing to market products and services is the cash cow
Is that from.ads?
