Woodworking is great; what a sense of pride and accomplishment when you make something with your hands that you and your family can use. I have made stools, storage units, filing cabinets, workbench, picture frames, shelves, a work desk with rails for rackmounted electronics gear, garden trellises, and so on.
Start small; do not get frustrated. Follow plans. Take your time. Buy good quality tools, but you do not need anything fancy. Cheap crappy tools are guaranteed frustration, especially when it comes to measuring.

Bonus: learning to do woodworking also gives you tool sharpening skills. Mrs. DudeThatCame2Sarnath never takes her kitchen knives to the store for sharpening; she has me do it and she is very happy with the results. You can also sharpen your chisels and plane irons, lawnmower blades, pocket knives, drill bits and more.

Gardening. Not sissy style in little pots. I mean in ground, compost mixes, timed irrigation, etc. It is one of the greatest hobbies to get good at because it might come in handy soon. In the winter you can try hydro or aquaponics and also experiment with greenhouses depending on your climate zone.
Yeah. They can't starve you out if you have your own supply. I cleaned up the yard today. Tomorrow, rototiller and compost pile. Throw compost everywhere, then till. Milorganite( high-octane fertilizer) and Epsom salt (boosts magnesium levels for better crop yield)
