I prefer Black American because I'm not from Africa. Also, it's complicated for me personally because I'm mixed race. I'm Black, Filipina, and Cherokee Indian. So yeah, It's hard to put me perfectly into one category. I just say black because it's easier and less confusing to people since I have darker skin tone.
But to answer your question specifically, I think "Black American" is more fitting than "African American".
