It's from a book by two smart guys who studied history. They found that there seems to be a natural cycle that happens to society roughly every 80 years, broken down into four periods of 20 years each. Each of these is referred to as a "turning."
Based on their theory, we are in the fourth turning... "Crisis." The fourth turning is always based on some sort of widespread or worldwide crisis happening, that ultimately causes a seismic shift in attitudes, and ushers in the next cycle, which is a "feel-good" 20 year cycle of great prosperity. The last Crisis cycle was from the Great Depression through WW II.
If history repeats itself (like it is wont to do), we are in the middle of the Crisis period, which will last another 4-6 years, but at the end of that period comes a period of enlightenment, and a world that will be great for our kids, even if it kind of sucks for us right now.
I’ve read it twice. Great book. Such huge explanatory power. It can be a bit fortune cookie, but the detailed explanations of the last 8 turnings are pretty amazing
Looks to me that it is an attempt to identify historical cycles based on roughly eighty year cycles.
Stretch!
Not familiar with this. ELI5

I recommend the book
