The friends feature is very easy, and Valve takes data security seriously. They also haven't shilled out and gone public, because they have some ethics.

Thats a dumb idea pede. If you want privacy use Session messenger not signal or telegram for that matter. they both use centerlized servers and require phone #

Session is the only messenger capable of protecting your metadata. no phone # needed to use.

send messages not metadata.

You don't have to give any metadata away. Valve is pretty good about not requiring a lot of information. Have you used steam?
