A true commie believes that a communist utopia can be created out of a socialist dictatorship, something that never has worked (and never could) in real life, despite hundreds of attempts throughout history.
Socialists plain and simple want their socialist dictatorship, including the totalitarian state.
SJW's, like Joe Biden and most of the Dems makes socialism even worse than it already is, by changing "equality" to "equity", simply put, race and gender decides if someone should have more than others. Looking at Soviet socialism and North Korea, at least everyone are equally poor except for the elite. That's why SJW's are so much more dangerous than normal socialism.
I look at their ideological basis being closer to Fascism than anything else.
Fascism seeks for the party to control all the levers of power in society. Communism seeks that all the means of production be controlled by the party. It's a slight difference, to be sure... But a meaningful one, especially given the de-industrialization of the past 4 decades.
But, I will agree, that both forms of totalitarianism will not bring utopia, but rather a hell on earth.

Ackchyually, a Marxist communist would believe that full communism would be achieved through a transitory state of dictatorship of the proletariat.
Other forms of communism have diverging viewpoints on how you get there.
