I seen this pic before and it had the Lens looking thing under the rifle barrel circled. I am not military and have no idea what that is....is it for laser tag pretend shooting or something....i dunno.
I was thinking it was an acog and the armor nco had them mount it on the underside to fit in the weapons rack but I think you are right. It's still not an optimal location to mount anything except a 203.

I dunno. I was iron sights when i served. Never been much for attachments. If you can qualify at 500 with iron, you don't really need optics
