I can't imagine what is going through their minds.
But it absolutely brings to mind my regular thought about the devil. He knows, without a doubt, that he will be defeated thoroughly:
"And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him." (Revelation 12:9)
He knows he's going to lose. He knows it will be total, and permanent. And yet he keeps inflicting more damage, and hate, and lies, and destruction. Why? And I'm left with some combination of:
that's just the nature of evil; that's what evil does; it doesn't know how to do anything else
pride to think that he is God's equal, that his desires can supersede God's plan
