China could defeat Taiwan in a war but it would be extremely bloody and it would cost China tremendously. Unlike Hong Kong, which was relying on it's economic ties, to prevent China's takeover, Taiwan has always invested in a robust military and strong defense. yeah, China could do it but it would nearly topple Ji at this point. I think China likes displaying their military more than using their military. Keep in mind, most of China's soldiers have no chance of getting married and have no real freedom. That's not a good military to go into an armed conflict with.
To an extent, I agree with you. Although, being an island, Taiwan is susceptible to a war of attrition. The Chinese could blockade the island, and shell it continuously. They would also be able to specifically target VIPs and key infrastructure remotely without taking heavy losses of personnel. This would not look good to the rest of the world, but will any other nation truly intervene against a nuclear power?
No. No other nations would intervene but China would instantly become a pariah nation. Furthermore, China doesn't want to drive Taiwan into the ground. They want to control it. They especially need the women. Do not underestimate what a huge crisis is happening in China due to a shortage of women. Tens of millions of Chinese men have no hope of every having a wife. Taiwan knows its situation and has developed its military and defenses accordingly. They know they would lose a total war but their goal is to take as much of China down with them. That is the deterrent.
