On the site I got this image from, it has a map key stating blue = dem and red = rep. If there was a switch of colors, it was for a short period of time in the late 20th century. Unless that's the point you're trying to make already.

Before this, that method of delineating the map is the only way the parties switched, and that choice was the media presenting the result. People were that easy to convince of a party switch. Colors on a TV screen.
