I received this message just now, conveniently near the time when the offices a closed for the weekend.
Let's see how many factual errors we can find in this message:
======== January 15, 2021 Dear Friend, When Benjamin Franklin was asked in 1787 what kind of government we would have, he answered, "A republic, if you can keep it."
Nearly two and a half centuries later, President Donald J. Trump's rhetoric incited a deadly coup on the U.S. Capitol as part of his crusade to overturn the results of a legitimate election. As a result, six Americans are dead, dozens are wounded, and communities across the country are reeling from images of white nationalists and domestic terrorists storming through the halls of Congress carrying confederate flags and brutally assaulting Capitol Police.
If we ignore this attack, and what caused it in the name of unity or let the clock run out on this administration, the violence will only get worse. Allowing the President of the United States to incite this attack without consequences threatens the future of our democracy and the peaceful transfer of power on which it depends. There’s no doubt that the President and his allies have put our democratic republic in jeopardy, but I am confident that we will survive this crisis and emerge stronger if we pull together in defense of our democracy.
Twelve days ago, I swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. On Wednesday, to uphold that oath, I voted in support of the article of impeachment, charging President Trump with “incitement of insurrection” for his actions on January 6, 2021. Every minute President Trump is in office he represents an imminent threat to the Constitution, our democracy, and the American people. We are a nation of laws, and the President must be held to account for his crimes, immediately removed from office, and banned from holding elected office so that this never happens again.
The title should have read "Message from Hon (sic) Sean Casten ...."
