Relying on "freemium" from companies that intend to resell our activity and log our intimate conversations should have been legislated against a decade ago.

Our NSA has been an utter failure in this regard. They should be up Discord's ass right now having a talk about their infrastructure.
It is up to us. We are the last stand and our friends over at Discord and other groups like them are participating in think tank efforts which recognize this. We have yet to coalesce and they are already ready for us to do so.

"Does a secure and open source, self-hostable alternativew to existing, mainstream platforms exist?"
It's,
"Does anyone here have a physical server powerful enough server to host TD chat on one of the above options?"
Sadly, while I have some degree of technical know-how, I seriously lack that kind of capacity. If there's a GoFundMe alternative I should be looking into to get this going, let me know. PM the mods if you're interested in making this a thing, so we can get it stickied or something.
IRC is definitely the way. Discord is nothing but a trap and has made IRC disappear like Twatter has made RSS disappear for news aggregation. We need to get back to IRC and make improvements to it so that it's as good as IRC.
there's telegram. the app is fantastic for all platforms (i prefer telegram x for android over stock). only downside you're forced to expose your mobile number. i never liked gaymer platforms, they're always bloated to hell and needlessly complex, and owned by the left/CIA proxy capital. if all else fails there's always tried-and-true jabber and IRC.

Luckily the dotwin mods are actual battle-hardened gods and know how to fight. But cloudfare may decide to pull the plug, and this site will come under full attack.
If you admin a discord server, I highly recommend that you look into migrating over to Matrix (video), for these key reasons:
It's a decentralized platform. Servers can band together and create a virtual cloud backup of their communities.
The project is open source. You can download and compile the code yourself.
The lead developers host a free server and web-app so you can try it out.
The experience is very similar to Discord and other modern-day chat rooms.
