I tried it on a pad. It's ok. You need a phone that is friendly to switching ROMs. It does take some technical knowledge, if you device bricks you can't recover it. If you lack the skill, type "lineageos" in ebay and some phones will popup.
There's a new mobile linux variant being developed right now, can't remember the name, but it's looking promising.
There are ways to degoogle Android. You can also flash different ROMs, like AOSP, which is usually kept up to date by the old school droid ROM-modding crowds, but that requires a bit more know-how.
If you're running an iPhone, you might as well ditch it because you're locked in their ecosystem

Yes💩 I got an iPhone once, never again. They are very immoral. Very obvious planned obsolescence to make you upgrade
