Frederick the Great of Prussia played and composed for the flute specifically because of it's military importance. Also it's one of the few instruments that can be played upright in a dignified posture without contorting your body into all sorts of goofy positions.
As that kid who read during recess, I felt the same way until I found out the first chair flute gets promoted to piccolo. Then I switched to bass guitar
I messed around with flute when I was younger. Surprised by how much spit accumulated inside the thing. Kinda turned me off from it.
Also it's a girl's instrument for some reason. Unless you're the Jethro Tull guy.

Piccolo is a way more prominent instrument in a marching band. Its also basically the second most common instrument in 1776 music after drums!
