I wonder what would happen if one of the kids said "teacher, this is moronic". Detention? Worse?
It is almost impossible for a modern child to develop critical thinking skills because every time they use it, they will be punished for wrong think. Imagine a child saying -- mommy, how come Trump lost when there are Trump signs everywhere? Daddy, how come masks got rid of the Flu, but not covid?
The thing at the end of the flute is weird, presumably to catch condensation since it won't be saliva. I used to play one in band and don't remember it dripping -- perhaps the room temperature was too high to condense much.
I played trombone and that instrument was full to the brim with spit and a good toot would send droplets flying everywhere. So catching that all with cloth isn't the worst idea in the world.
I can see it with a trombone since you are blowing directly into it, rather than across the top of of a flute mouthpiece. On the other hand, the flute end is probably right next to the next band players ear.
