A near neighbor of mine house burned down to the ground early this afternoon. The poor guy lost it all. He had a grease fire in his kitchen and it got out of control. He had no fire extinguisher. He was crying and over and over saying why did I not have a fire extinguisher. Very sad, very sad indeed. Me and other neighbors are helping him the best we can for now. He also said he does have home owners insurance, but it's nowhere near enough to cover his loss.

You can also use baking soda to put out grease fires.
This is true, funny no one mentioned this when this went down? Maybe he did not have that either or he did not know. It's real sad. the guy is a good neighbor too.
another tip: get a fire extinguisher cause by the time you find your baking soda and find out you don't have enough to put the fire out, you could have had the fire extinguisher put it out a minute ago
I keep a giant bag of it under my sink for just that purpose. I also have 3 fire extinquishers. I like to be prepared.
By the time you figure out how to use the fire extinguisher it is too late. Baking soda and flour are usually easily accessible and low tech and thus quicker
I was going to say the same thing. Or flour.
DO NOT PUT FLOUR ON A FIRE! FLOUR IS HIGHLY FLAMMABLE!
I did not know that
Especially since they will shut down "services" including water to make us as miserable as possible.
Let's hope not.
Always great to have a few on hand. Don't buy the crappy Kidde extinguisher that you find in the big box stores. Buy Amerex or Ansul. Occasionally check that the needle is in the green and maybe even turn it upside down to let the powder fluff up. Take it to your local shop to have it serviced at least every 6 years. Once it gets shot off it's toast and needs to be serviced even if you didn't empty all of the chemical.

Can we help?
We all got him setup to stay at are house and others. Until the fire gets investigated and he collects on his insurance. And they will make arrangements for him to get a hotel.
BTW, these work pretty good as well and are good to get for eldery/panic prone people that may knock themselves out with the fire extinguisher before they can get the pin out.

Let's see, 2 in the kitchen, one near the fireplace, one on the back porch where I BBQ, 2 in the garage, and one in each bedroom. I think I'm covered.
