A lot of the elite indirectly ride off of the federal reserve banking cartel pumping up bubbles all the time. In addition, many of them rely on regulations that are specifically designed to limit or lock out competition, while increasing costs and profit margins. This wealth comes at the expense of the middle class, who is denied opportunities, and who suffers from the inflation tax, which hits people paid with salaries, but not people paid with stock options.

They know that their wealth in excess of what the market would give them comes at the expense of a free society, and the middle class, and so in order to justify themselves, they look down at the middle class as the undeserving little people who are just a bunch of lucky white trash, who should be thankful for whatever table scraps the elite give them.
