No one's following any rules anymore. What difference, at this point, does it make?

We've got a whole generation (or two) of people who never learned what the rules are because they were never held to the rules.

Yeah, if he even mentioned it Pete Rose would never have a chance of being reinstated again.

I always thought he got a raw deal, since he never bet against his own team. Michael Jordan only got a 1-year suspension from basketball for betting on games, that he was allowed to disguise as a “retirement.”

AbleKane 2 points ago +3 / -1

He lied trough his teeth, he knew when they were weak and knew when the odds were right to put money on the other team.

Yeah, but so do analysts and insiders. If they do it it's fine. The only real issue is 'did he bet and throw in order to solidify his bet'. You can only punish people for throwing, not knowing who is good and who isn't.

No I don't think he altered his game to tilt the outcome but he knew the strength of the teams they were playing and even though the Reds were big in those days there were a few teams they had trouble with like the Montreal Expos. Depending on who was pitching he could make an educated guess that they could lose that game an bet a stack on it. The rumours in those days from some of his teammates was that he was "dirty" whatever they meant by that.

A. The only evidence that he never bet against his team is his statement that he didn't

B. The dude fucking lied for YEARS about not betting at all

C. There's credible speculation that the only reason Rose agreed to the ban was to stop Dowd's investigation from finding the he did, indeed, bet against his team

D. He was a player-manager at the end of his career, meaning he had direct control over his lineup and changes. While we don't necessarily know that he would have gone to a shitty pitcher in his bullpen to throw a game, it's entirely likely that he used his fireman more frequently in games that he bet big to win.

E. Even if he never actually bet against his team, betting big multiple games in a row and then not betting on one is just as bad.

F. He fucking knew that what he did would get him banned for life and he did it anyway.

I have no sympathy for someone who only finds remorse after being caught. Fuck Pete Rose. I hope he gets a call on his deathbed from the commissioner, who says "we talked it over and all agreed: congratulations, Pete, you're still banned. Get fucked"

Oh also his being the hit king doesn't mean shit when you look at his stats late in his career. Ty Cobb was still an above-average hitter in his last few seasons (his worst wRC+ was 115, and he never posted a mark that wasn't above 100 after his rookie season). Rose bettered Cobb's worst season in exactly one of his last seven years, with a mark below 100 three of those years. He literally only broke Cobb's record because he was the manager and could put his own garbage ass in the lineup.

banned for good reason, he wasnt set up. Dude broke the rules repeatedly We should apply the rules equally and ban Jordan too.

AbleKane 3 points ago +4 / -1

Absolutely man, I totally agree with you, he showed no remorse, lied through his teeth, was arrogant as hell and ended up hurting a lot of people around him. Sure he is one of the greats but there has to be a price to pay for betrayal and betting against his own team would definitely be included in the definition of betrayal.

It's actually not, it's "permanent ineligibility". He's banned in perpetuity, as Shoeless Joe was (although that was a genuine tragedy).

It's literally not. He's permanently ineligible. The circumstances are different because he 100% bet on games and lied about it for years, while the Black Sox mostly came clean.

A. You're literally wrong

B. The Black Sox actually can say that. They didn't bet on the World Series, only threw the games for a payoff. And do you even know what point shaving is? It's almost strictly a basketball thing, because it's nearly impossible in other sports, especially baseball.

C. There is no study which has proven that steroids have a significant impact on a player's performance. Couple the with the fact that nearly everyone in the league was juicing, including guys like Marvin Benard who has as much power as Adam fucking Schiff.

D. There are have been players in the Hall who have used performance enhancing substances for decades (Willie Mays and Hank Aaron admitted using greenies, which nearly every player in the league used until they were banned in the last 10-15 years or so). Babe Ruth himself tried to use multiple substances, like bull semen, to get an advantage.

E. Pete Rose was actually kind of shit as a player for a long time. He was below average for the last seven years of his career, basically doing nothing but still inserting himself into the lineup to break Cobb's record.

F. He literally used corked bats for YEARS. Even if he is reinstated after his death, he'll be banned for that.

G. Even if he gets reinstated after his death and doesn't get banned for corking his bats, he'll immediately be declared permanently ineligible (AGAIN) because he admitted to betting on games that he played in. Rule 21 states explicitly that that is grounds for PERMANENTLY INELIGIBILITY. He knew that he would be banned FOREVER and did it anyway. Fuck him.

H. Don't act like you know baseball better than I do.

Dude deserves to be in the hall

Thep1mp 1 point ago +2 / -1

He will never be reinstated and won’t be in the Hall of Fame in his lifetime. I’m sure he’ll get in after he passes- he absolutely deserves it.

No, it's "permanent ineligibility". Ask the Black Sox how dying turned out for them

Is TD just a personal wishlist for pardons now?

Ehh. Frankly, the Astros scandal is only so damaging to the sport because Manfred is a joke and gave the team a slap on the wrist, while steadfastly refusing to punish the players. Rose was betting while managing, where he could have actively tried to throw games while either betting against himself, or simply not betting at all.

Most of the cheating bullshit teams have done (stealing signs has existed for over 100 years, literally Babe Ruth injected bull semen as a proto steroid, Hank Aaron and many MANY others have admitted to using amphetamines [greenied], etc) has been in the service of winning games. What the Black Sox did (likely minus Shoeless Joe) and what Rose may have done would effectively illigitimize every game he and they played

There’s no pardons in baseball!

Ichiro should be the hit king but he conceded when he accepted the rookie of the year award.

FuckRedditMAGAMAGA 2 points ago +2 / -0

Eh. NPB is like AAA+ or AAAA. If they allowed those stats into the record books they'd also have to throw in minor league numbers, and then suddenly Hank Aaron is number two to Sadaharu Oh, not the true GOAT in Bonds
