No I don't think he altered his game to tilt the outcome but he knew the strength of the teams they were playing and even though the Reds were big in those days there were a few teams they had trouble with like the Montreal Expos. Depending on who was pitching he could make an educated guess that they could lose that game an bet a stack on it. The rumours in those days from some of his teammates was that he was "dirty" whatever they meant by that.
