This was what everyone's greatest fear about Gain-of-function research were. It's amazing that they were able to turn a possible fuck up into something they enormously increased their power by. Maybe someone rogue scientist was bribed into releasing it or infecting colleagues with it as it's just too damned convenient for so many who have been working on this terrible research for at least a decade.
