Government is a religion. That's why they hate christianity so much, because it's competition. (I say this as an atheist, with great respect for christianity).

There's all kinds of religious language and analogies littered throughout politics- to subtly imply and remind us how it really is today.

Not only do they not realize they are servants of the public, but they instead also believe themselves to be some kind of gods to us. It's at least a few drunk-with-power notches more than just the classic dynamic of royals over peasants.

It's been like that in the US ever since George Washington put down the whiskey rebellion. Many just don't realize it.
