Because we're being prostituted as the World's Piggy Bank™ by our "leaders."
Honestly, I'd have no problem helping other countries by giving them aid, supplies, or military help if needed, but WE HAVE ENOUGH PROBLEMS IN OUR OWN COUNTRY THAT WE NEED TO DEAL WITH:
Millions of Americans are going hungry, yet Bill Gates own a quarter of all farmland in the United States, presumably to feed starving kids in Africa, when we have enough of that going on here.
Congress is giving billions of dollars to fight corruption in absolute shitholes like the Democratic Republic of the Congo or Sudan or Uganda, when our leaders are probably among the most corrupt in the world.
The vast majority of products sold in the United States are made in foreign countries, including steel, which is essential for the military to defend our country. Where is almost all of US-used steel made? China, our most dangerous foreign adversary.
As OP said, we are $27 trillion in debt, and yet we are giving money to shithole countries to help THEM pay off THEIR national debt. Literally WTF?
Millions of Americans are living in poverty (granted, the "poverty line" in the US is literally median income in the European Union, but whatever), so we should continue to cut taxes and deregulate the economy to encourage economic growth that would lift up everybody, especially the poor, just like President Trump has been doing.
NO MORE WARS!!! We've spent TRILLIONS of dollars in the Middle East, and what exactly do we have to show for it? Dead Americans? Yup. A more stable Mid East? Nope, overthrowing Saddam Hussein, and later Ghaddafi, sent the region to shit and directly caused the rise of ISIS and Iran. Lifting war-torn nations out of poverty? No. Making the US safer? Nope, jus the opposite, in fact. So who wins? The Military-Industrial Complex. Roughly one-fifth or one-sixth of the US economy (I'm not sure the exact number, but I'm pretty sure it's in that ballpark) is dependent on us being at war. So those in power, especially Congress, whose campaigns are bankrolled by these large defense contracting corporations, and the military leaders who leave the Pentagon and directly move to a seven-plus figure job at Boeing or Lockheed-Martin (the Revolving Door), continue to push these destructive and unproductive wars to enrich themselves. TREASON!
Finally, we should follow the advice of the Father of Our Country, George Washington. He warned against foreign entanglements, and he was right. The United States should go back to an isolationist foreign policy. As long as your country isn't threatening us, you do you! (I am not advocating for a complete withdrawal from the world. Some of the US's best work internationally is mediating disputes between other countries, as President Trump has so masterfully done during his presidency. This I completely support.)
