Socialism: you die from starvation

Capitalism: You die from eating too much food

In the more civilized socialist states, like in Czechoslovakia, there was never hunger. But I recognize the queue immediately anyway. The standard offer of food in the markets was very very limited in variety, you could buy two kinds of bakery products, flour, milk, two kinds of cheese, two or three kinds of fruit and vegetables (local produce), and so on.

If you wanted more variety, especially more luxurious or foreign produce, you needed to go to special markets for the communist elite (which used its own special currency which you had to buy on the black market) or wait patiently until some extra goods (like bananas) was delivered to a normal market - then such a queue immediately formed (and only the first half of the queue got the bananas)...

We still have it in our language, queue like for bananas means a very very long queue.
