ELI5: Why can’t we get our own servers and just connect to the Internet ourselves?

We can. Go buy us many many servers and start putting together a data center with N+1 redundancy. You did order those circuits months ago, right? When you’re done we can start configuring routers and switches. Oh yeah...and we need the SAN and software installed before bed time.
