The philosophy behind amateur radio is very similar to owning firearms.
One reason people own firearms is so they do not require police for protection. The firearm owner wants to be responsible for his own safety. He requires a license, practices, spends money, becomes smarter, and enjoys the hobby.
Amateur radio is the same mindset. I don't want to rely on AT&T, or Verizon, or CNN, or Comcast, or TD.W for communication outside my bubble. I practice, spend money, become smarter, have fun with the hobby. I can easily communicate with most of north america and western europe. Remember, amateur radio is point to point....there is no middleman. I maintain my equipment, other hams maintain their equipment...no problems.
Walkie Talkies and CBs do not require a license. Depending on the area, these can end up with lots of jokers tying up frequencies. Their range is relatively short, so this is only a local problem (only people near the joker can hear him).
The High Frequency ham bands can go all around the world. One of the main purposes of ham is for communication during emergencies. By requiring a license, the operator is forced to learn how to operate his radio correctly. Its kind of lame to require a license. But its a pleasure to interact with other ham nerds, because most everyone is very professional, polite, and smart.
Thanks for replying blacktankguy. What particularly interests me right now is via licensing I assume your name and address is documented making it easier for "the powers that be" to, well essentially 'find yer'. If you get my drift. Or perhaps I'm becoming paranoid? 😜
Or guys like you take on an apprentice or two, so the other hammers don't get ticked at poor protocol. Why give them another way to track you by getting a license to communicate?
If this site ever goes down my support of Trump will only go up even more. We can't doom in absence of our community and it will just be a celebration that they view him and us as that dangerous, while we figure out how to regather.
