Why the hell is the CIA so .... Ya know. I mean, the whole reason to join the CIA in the first place is to spy for America to keep it strong. You'd think.... Eh, you know.

Why the heck aren't they the good guys? I even thought of applying when I was a kid and didn't know, as a way to serve my country.

I mean, I can kind of get being all "Presidents are a problem because we need someone who can do long term planning to stay on top."

I can understand that. But to throw in with the people who want to shred the constitution is beyond me. No guns and no free speech and no voting for leaders anymore?

tl;dr: you can't be the good guy if you deal drugs, run hoes, blackmail, break every law in every country and kill people. You'd be a dumb motherfucker if you thought you could keep your moral compass longer than a NY minute in that line of work.

Intelligence mixes with the underworld all the time. It's a consequence, or maybe by nature the principal, of the trade. Human intel is essentially prostitution. There are, of course, many methods in humint but that's the easiest and one of the more productive ones. Then there's the wetwork. The biggest factor, I think, is the funding. A lot of that black budget has to be laundered through shady businesses so the money seems legitimate. There's always an opportunity to "invest" in illegal activities and double your budget. Humint also mixes with drugs all the time. Even if you don't sell the drugs, you need to supply them. People can't exist in that environment and remain moral for very long. And when your boss doesn't want to know how you did it but you get a promotion for getting the job done, it's even harder. Bonus points if you figure out a "legal" loophole for your boss's children and family to make some money legally. It's not a recipe for ethics. It's a necessary trade but it's not the kind of trade you want to elevate beyond sewage technician. It's not the kind of trade where managers should be owning million dollar homes. But here we are: the people who deal in drugs, murder, prostitution and every kind of immoral behavior you can imagine end up in media as "experts" in how the country should be run.
