The people that control literally every cultural institution have gotten to that point because people constantly write off their malicious activity as stupidity.
To clarify, I'm not saying there aren't evil people, I'm just saying that they're in the minority, and most of the people doing things are deranged pawns. Otherwise, evil doesn't work together well without being compromised, and anyone smart enough would avoid being compromised anyway.
