Any app or program for that matter that claims privacy, but is centrally owned by an entity is always at risk for penetration and/or backdoors. That's a fact they are NEVER FULLY PRIVATE.

How do you combat this? Go with decentralized platforms. There aren't many of them YET, but there are a few. If you're confused about what decentralization means - it means that a network of computers hosts the data and programming that runs the decentralized application. What that means, is nobody ever has access to the full data set of any program, application or user. It's decentralized.

This is one of the reasons everyone freaks out about the future and value of Bitcoin and blockchain technology.

So, this messaging App Called Session is private and secure by design. Nobody owns it. Nobody knows who you are if you use it... It works just like Telegram and Signal - but it's better.

To learn more about the tech, their blog is great. Explains the tech for non-techies.
