Are you sure people can just "try to get on your local election boards?" I just did some internet searching for my city (NYC) and I don't see anything about getting on the BOE. You can become a poll-worker! I did the training for that once. I'm thinking a spot on the BOE might be a political appointment and not something the average person can simply try to get on.
