“Defeat Disinfo will protect the American people by coordinating emotional, topical, visual, and personal narratives in response to the president’s disinformation through election day.”
The initiative is run by Curtis Hougland, whose received initial funding for the technology from DARPA, the Pentagon's research arm, as part of an effort to combat extremism overseas. He insists Democrats are ill-prepared for the looming battle over information and attention, which is bound to play an outsize role in November.
The group, Defeat Disinfo, will use artificial intelligence and network analysis to map discussion of the president's claims on social media. It will seek to intervene by identifying the most popular counter-narratives and boosting them through a network of more than 3.4 million influencers across the country – in some cases paying users with large followings to take sides against the president.
Defeat Disinfo PAC’s system employs artificial intelligence to track President Trump’s messaging and then uses algorithms to select the best way to attack the President’s claims. When President Trump defended the rights of people protesting against stay-at-home lockdown orders, the system recommended countermeasures of healthcare workers’ stories. Defeat Disinfo uses the example of the “bleach” uproar (in which people objected to President Trump’s idle speculation about turning disinfectant bleach into a COVID-19 treatment) as testimony to the need for the system to oppose the President’s statements to the American people
