As a teacher I spent way too much time sitting through Equity training and diversity training pre-Trump (and even a little after).

We were essentially told that, since we are white, we have no idea how to discipline students of color. We have to give them miles of slack when they mess up, because they aren't as privileged as we are.

So, there was a blanket order by our superiors that anytime a student of color was sent to the office, you must talk to them right away to get their side of the story, remind them of what our expectations are, and then send them back to class as quickly as possible, with nothing noted on permanent records.

Doesn't sound TOO bad, except that this policy was put in place for ANY infraction, including:

  • Shouting/Cursing out teachers
  • Massive classroom distractions (standing on desks, running around the room)
  • Violent outbursts (throwing books, pencils, chairs, scissors)
  • Destruction of Property
  • Physical violence against other students
  • Assault of teachers

Essentially, students of color were no longer to be written up for breaking the rules. Because our white students and their parents would cry "foul" if THEY were written up for the same offense, we ended up with a system where nobody gets written up, and the worst you could expect to happen was a chat in the office and a phone call home. Now you see why school behaviors are in the shitter.

All in the name of equity.

So what about the poor white kids or the poor white trash kids? Are they given any special treatment?
