I don't really agree with this assessment, but there is some scientific basis to it. The ability to read body language and facial expressions works best in groups where general phenotype variation is very low -- which is to say, it's easier to get a read on people who look like you. The sense of distrust that tends to be felt toward other people who look and dress wildly different from one's own culture is an evolutionary holdover. The individual that fears the unknown as a prey animal tends to live longer than the individual that does not.
In layman terms - people seek and identify with like-minded, similar looking people. And healthy people like to think good of themselves and their peers.

I wouldn't go so far as to say any given group necessarily thinks their own group is superior to others, but in all other respects I think this logic is sound. This is why it's dangerous to not properly assimilate immigrants into native populations. When you allow large immigrant groups to form cultural enclaves, assimilation doesn't happen properly, and that's something we've allowed in the US since urbanization first got started.

I'll go as far as saying that minutiae like eye color sometimes matter. I'm a caucasian with almost black eyes (I know, strange mix) and I found I had the best relationships with dark brown/black eyes folk too and some of them had the same experiences

I've not heard of anything like that with eye color specifically, but I don't think I'd be very surprised if a study verified that hunch. I do know for certain that the size and shape of an individual's eyebrows and the resting shape of their mouth have a huge impact on whether or not a person is inclined to trust a person they've just met, though.
