I think it may be a slight overstatement to say "the raid set the course towards American Civil War." Perhaps better with continued a series of events that lead towards an eventuality.

I'd like to add the Rothschild's group "Mystick Krewe of Comus". A "mardi gras" club founded in 1857. By Albert Pike (hanged for his part in the Lincoln murder) Judah Benjamin (escaped to England) and a few other bankers.
