Overblown is the point, I think. It's a show of force. It's to show that patriots are animals and we are such a threat that from now on, they need to treat us in a manner that can only be seen as war.
Such a response will backfire in my opinion, other world leaders are disgusted by what is happening here, and if it has gotten to them then think of the rest of the regular Joes.
